The New Affirm Anti-Aging Laser: Improving Skin Texture

Treating acne scarring can be among the most difficult conditions a laser surgeon can face. New technologies are now becoming available, however, that are making patients skin much smoother, and helping improve their confidence. One such device is the new Affirm laser by Cynosure. This laser is demonstrating results for skin rejuvenation, brown spotting, acne scarring, and facial veins. Some patients have also said they like the results. "I think my skin looks great," says Diane S. from Philadelphia. Carol P. from Bryn Mawr says "People are telling me my skin looks great and asking me what I did."

FDA-Approved for Skin Rejuvenation, Not Acne Scarring

While not yet FDA-approved for acne scarring, the Affirm laser has been approved for use in skin rejuvenation, and patients who've had it for wrinkle treatment have also seen improvement in their acne scarring. Cynosure expects to have FDA-approval for acne scarring sometime in early 2009.

Physician Comments

Physicians who've used the device are seeing positive results. "When used properly, the Affirm Anti-Aging Workstation's unique technology is effective and safe for improving the texture and appearance of photoaged skin." said Dr. Brian Biesman of the Nashville Centre for Laser and Facial Surgery. Dr. Bruce Katz, Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine commented "Compared to other fractional resurfacing devices, we are actually seeing skin tightening at the same time and patients are very pleased." Dr. Katz added "The Affirm CO2 gives you the versatility to perform light to aggressive treatment with a single laser."

Treatment with Affirm

Treatment with the Affirm may take about 20 minutes for one session, though several treatments may be necessary to see good results, according to Cynosure. Following the treatment downtime is usually minimal, though you ought to discuss any aftercare that may be needed with your treating physician. Most patients have seen significant improvement within 3 to 5 treatments. Short term side effects may include passing redness, and tan or dusky appearance on the skin.

Combined Apex Pulse Technology

Fractional laser devices are increasingly popular among laser surgeons, as they are able to treat difficult conditions with limited downtime. Conditions such as stretch marks, acne scars and deep lines have shown promising results with fractional devices. What sets the Affirm apart is its unique Combined Apex Pulse (CAP) technology. This proprietary technology uses a diffractive lens array which provides a unique delivery and distribution of energy to the treatment area. This technology stimulates collagen remodeling and increases treatment effectiveness.
